Summertime heat is here in Tampa Bay. With seniors and their families moving during the summer months, this heat can become especially dangerous.
How can you beat the heat and stay safe while moving?
Here are some tips from the moving pros at Florida’s Best Moving for seniors (or anyone!) to stay cool during a summertime move!
Get Started Early
Try not to schedule your move on a Summer afternoon, especially here in Tampa Bay. It is always best to aim for an early morning move during the Summer, as the sun’s UV rays are at their strongest from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Most professional moving companies like us prefer to get started in the morning. If possible, we’ll work with you to choose a moving day where you can get a morning start to beat the heat. The bonus? You’ll be able to get settled into your new place a little earlier too. You’ll want a good nights’ rest after a move.
Take some of the burdens off moving this summer by letting the professionals at Florida’s Best Moving manage the moving of heavy boxes and furniture! Connect with us at (813) 485-6580 so you can focus on staying cool!
Sweating during a move can cause dehydration, and that is the last thing you need combined with the stress of moving.
Stay hydrated! Pack a large cooler full of ice and water to keep you cool. We recommend sticking with water instead of soda or sports drinks so you can stay adequately hydrated. Plus, if it gets too hot, you can cool yourself off with the ice!
Wear Lightweight Clothes
Short sleeve or sleeveless tops and shorts or capris are your best options for a busy (hot!) moving day. While it might be tempting to wear sandals, comfortable sneakers are your best choice for the day. (And will protect your feet!) Even when you have a professional mover, you will be moving around a lot to move items that will stay with you.
Keep the Air Conditioner on Low
There are going to be many people moving furniture and boxes in and out, so it does not make sense to keep your air conditioner on full blast. Setting it on low will keep the air cooler inside but will not waste energy. Make sure to take breaks in the cooler air, and do not overdo it!
Instead of using an air conditioner, you may want to set up a few fans to place throughout the house to keep air circulating.
Try Neck Coolers or Cooling Towels
Neck coolers are towels made from a special material that you soak in cold water and put around your neck to help keep you cool. During a summertime move, these are a favorite of our team! They are inexpensive to purchase and are perfect for cooling you down on a hot moving day or all year long.

Be Aware of Overheating Symptoms
Exposure to hot temperatures can be dangerous, especially for children and older people. It is important to be aware of any signs of overheating or heat-related illness during your move.
Symptoms can include:
- Elevated body temperature
- Muscle cramps
- General confusion
If you or anyone exhibits these symptoms during the move, get out of the heat and into air conditioning as soon as you can. Drink plenty of water, lie down, and dab yourself with cold towels or take a cool shower.
If you are moving into a senior living community with a pool, tell your friends and family members to bring their bathing suits. You can go for a quick dip to cool your body temperature down. If you do not have a pool, a sprinkler can be a fun way to help cool everyone down.
