Most people considering packing and unpacking as the biggest to-dos when moving into a new home. But really, it’s the things you do after moving in that make the biggest difference and are just as essential.
You may already feel overwhelmed by everything else that is going on such as getting ready to pack, move, and unpack that you may forget what needs to be done as soon as you get the keys to your new place.
Your New Home Checklist
Whether you have just purchased a new home or are renting, here is a quick list of some of the most important things to do when you move into your new home!
Change Your Address
Your address is connected to pretty much every aspect of your life. When people think of changing their address they might only think as far as going to the post office and changing their mailing address.
But make sure you are also updating your new address with your bank, credit cards, checkbook, insurance, driver’s license, car registration, and any subscriptions or loyalty programs.

You may never get the chance again to deep clean your home without any furniture or items in the home. You never know how well the previous owners cleaned the home, so a deep clean before moving in is a fresh start!
Whether you hire a company to deep clean or you do it yourself, you will be thankful to have a clean slate when you move in.

Set Up Utilities
If you have not already transferred your utilities to your new home, make sure you do it immediately so you can turn on the water, heat/AC, and power. Additionally, make sure to set up your cable and Internet if you plan to use those as well as your local waste management company so you can start throwing your moving trash away.
Stay safe at your new home. When moving in, make sure you do a thorough walk-through of your new home. Keep in mind these simple yet extremely important safety tips:
- Replace the air conditioning filters
- Find the fuse box and water valve
- Locate and put in new batteries in the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Vacuum out the dryer vent and air vents
- If you don’t have one, place a fire extinguisher in an accessible spot
Remember to change the locks! Even if you are not concerned about the previous owners, you never know who has a key to your home. If you have a garage, make sure to change the keypad to the garage (if applicable) and re-code the opener.
Make a list, prioritize, and schedule (if you’re not handy) any repairs that you feel need to be done based on the home inspection or just anything you have noticed that will make the home feel safer or more to your style/liking.
Store Important Documents
When moving into a new home make sure you gather all your new important documents in one safe spot, such as a filing cabinet. Between purchasing a home, home warranties, changing your addresses, and home repairs you probably have a lot of paperwork that might be important to have later.
Whether you keep the physical paper in a filing cabinet or scan them to your computer, you’ll want to know where they all are. You may also want to take photos of anything valuable in your home or any important features that could be used for insurance purposes.
Meet Your New Neighbors
Meeting your neighbors can be a lot easier and less awkward if you do it right away. While you don’t have to go door to door to introduce yourself, do make a point of introducing yourself when you see a neighbor around. Being friendly with your neighbors will go a long way.
