Does Moving Have to Be Stressful?

Is “stressful” the first word that comes to mind when thinking about a move? Yes, moving can be one of the most stressful things that you can do, but it doesn’t have to be so overwhelming!

As a professional moving company, we have seen it all, and we want you to have a smooth stress-free move (not a chaotic one). Getting ready to move soon? You’re going to scroll for our tips that can help you avoid the stress of moving!

Acknowledge the Stress

This is a time of change so yes, moving can be stressful, but denying that you are stressed can make it even worse. Stress is normal and natural, so admit that it is there, acknowledge it, and take steps to work through it. Take a walk around your current neighborhood, call a friend, or get work done.

If you’re overly stressed or feeling panicked, we can help with the packing and moving and even store it all for you until your new home is ready.

Give Yourself Enough Time

It takes time to pack up your home, especially if you have to downsize in the process. Though it can be done fairly quickly if you put your mind to it, it is best to give yourself ample time if you plan to do it yourself.

Remember:

  • gather your supplies well in advance of packing (and have a plan to get more boxes in case you run out)
  • schedule your utilities to be changed over in advance of your move
  • allow time for cleaning the home you are leaving as well

Have a Plan

Some people may need a to-do list or a packing checklist to get motivated, while others will just start. Do what works best for you. Set deadlines for each stage of your move and complete them early enough to give yourself time for any unplanned problems or issues.

Have a specific plan for what goes in what box, and label everything clearly and consistently. This helps ensure that everything makes it where it’s supposed to go, especially when you are using professional movers!

Let Things Go

Moving is a great time to get rid of all the things that you just don’t need anymore. If you have gently-used furniture, it might be time to donate it and get a replacement for your new place.

Have books that you haven’t read? Electronics that you don’t use anymore? Items that you completely forgot that you had? Sell what you can, and donate the rest. This helps you to avoid moving a bunch of items you no longer need and allows you to start with a clean slate at your new place!

Be a Tourist

If you are moving to a new city, spend some time looking for new restaurants to try or places that you want to visit. Plan a day after you move to be a “tourist” in your new town and go explore even you don’t have everything unpacked yet!

Stay Active

While moving can help you stay active, if you usually go for a morning jog, keep up with it! If you have to pack up your exercise equipment, find a temporary replacement, or get a free trial at a local gym.

At the very least, take a walk to get away from the stress of moving. Staying active and getting your endorphins going is proven to reduce stress.
