How to Avoid Losing Items During a Move

Moving to a new home is a HUGE task. From packing to moving day, it can be a stressful time. This can be exacerbated when the chaos of the move wraps up and you find that something valuable has been lost.

Items often get lost when they are stuffed in the wrong box or misplaced. Either way, there is a strong possibility that you will leave something behind when you move.

Here are some ways to make a move without losing precious items:

Pack One Room at a Time

Packing one room at a time and properly labeling the boxes are great methods to ensure that nothing gets lost. When focusing on one room at a time, you are far less likely to misplace items or put them in the wrong sorting bin. (Like the trash or donation box!)

Even though this might take a little longer, the attention to detail will ensure that your prized possessions arrive safely at your new home.

Not ready to pack? We can do it for you! We will ensure that every item is packed with the utmost care so you can focus on life beyond the move. Call us today, (813) 485-6580

Create a List

While you pack, create a master list of everything coming with you and which box each item is in. Numbering your boxes might help if you decide to make a master packing list.

The more detailed and organized your master list is, the less chance of losing something precious!

Use Zippered Bags

Inevitably when moving, small pieces for furniture reassembly or appliance components get lost. For small items, store them in zip-top bags and then use tape or a rubber band to keep the bag and the bigger parts together. This will make it easier when you are arranging your new home.

This works well for furniture pieces, electronic cables, phone or computer charges, silverware, and other small items throughout the house.

Label Everything

When in doubt, label it. Seriously. On each box, write the name of the room it goes to and a summary of what is inside. Label the tops and sides to ensure that it arrives in the right place. If fragile, write “This Side Up,” with arrows so nothing gets broken.

Pack Personal Items in Your Vehicle

Even if you trust your moving company, you should still put your most valuable belongings in your vehicle. You never know what could happen along the way, so keep precious photo albums or important documents with you throughout the move. (Imagine losing a birth certificate!)

The following items cannot be put on a moving truck:

  • Alcohol
  • Fertilizers
  • Gardening chemicals
  • Unsealed food
  • Perishable foods
  • Gasoline
  • Propane tanks

If you aren’t sure what you can put on the moving truck, just ask. We will let you know.

Get Insurance

Since moving puts your possessions at risk of damage or theft, it might be wise to purchase a moving-insurance policy to reimburse you in the event of mishaps during the move.

If you hired movers, they typically are responsible for what they are transporting. However, it is more complicated if you are moving out of state. Federal law requires moving companies to offer two types of insurance coverage for the move: full-value protection or released-value protection.

Full-value protection makes your mover liable for the total replacement value of lost or damaged belongings.

Released-value protection provides minimal protection. In the event of damage or loss, you will receive 60 cents per pound for your items.

Moving policies do not cover the following:

  • Perishable, dangerous, or hazardous materials.
  • Damage incurred when you pack it yourself.
  • Failure to inform your movers in writing of items that hold significant value.
  • Damage that results from a natural disaster.
