So often, during a move, important details can get lost in the shuffle. Your Medicare coverage should not be one of those items. We’re moving experts, therefore we called in a Medicare insurance professional to help! Here we offer tips and helpful information about how to handle your Medicare coverage before and after a move and if your plan will cover the cost of moving.

The Type of Medicare Plan You Have

Determines the Next Step when You Move.

How to Handle your Medicare Plan If Moving

Two main factors determine how you should handle your Medicare plan during a move – the type of coverage you have and where you are relocating (locally or in another state).

Local insurance agent, Bob McKnight, is a 20+ year agent with McKnight & McKnight Insurance. We asked him what to consider if moving with Medicare.

“How it affects you depends on the type of Medicare Plan that you have. If you have Medicare and a Medicare Supplement then you will not have much of a change as those are National plans that are good anywhere. You will need to inform the insurance company of your address change, which could change the rates, but the plan will stay the same.”

National Plans that Require Minimal Changes

Certain Medicare plans (see below) are national plans, meaning they are valid no matter what state you live. When you move, all that is required is to notify Social Security of your change of address. The move could affect the rates, but your plan will remain the same.

  • Medicare Part A
  • Medicare Part B
  • Medicare Supplement Plans
  • Medigap (excluding Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin)

Medicare Plans That Vary Based on Location

The plans below vary from area to area and could require you to use an in-network provider. Therefore, you will need to determine if your new address is within the plan’s service area. If it is not, you may need to choose a new plan.

  • Medicare Part D (prescription drug plans)
  • Medicare Advantage
  • Medicare Cost Plans (only available in certain states)
  • Medicare SELECT (a special type of Medigap plan that uses a provider network)

Bob McKnight added:

“If they have a Medicare Advantage plan then those are only good in the state that you live. If you move to a new state then you will have to get a new plan. The same plan might not be available in that state. Your Medicare coverage will likely not help to pay for a move even if you have to move to get a specific type of care. However, plan benefits do vary.”

If you have Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D and the service area requires a new plan, it is imperative to make the switch the month you move or within two months after. If you fail to do so, you will be automatically switched back to an original Medicare plan.

Will Medicare Pay for My Move?

There is a chance that Medicare would pay for a move if you are relocating to a qualified institutional facility (nursing home, skilled nursing facility, assisted living facility, etc.)  Of course, this depends on the type of Medicare plan you have and the applicable coverage.

Whether Medicare covers the cost of moving or not, you will benefit from quite a bit of flexibility in terms of making changes to your Medicare coverage. For additional information on moving and your Medicare coverage, it is best to contact your health insurance agent.
