Stress-Free Unpacking Starts with Organized Packing

Moving can be both exciting and exhausting, especially when it comes to the packing and unpacking part! While many people opt to do the packing and unpacking themselves, our team at Florida’s Best Moving can help get it done if you are in any way overwhelmed by the process.

Here are some steps that you can take to make unpacking less stressful – and get settled in faster – from our packing and moving pros at Florida’s Best Moving.

Planning and Organization is Key

Stress-free unpacking starts with organized packing. Learning how to strategically pack can significantly cut down on headaches once you begin to unpack at your new home.

We recommend packing an essentials box or bag that contains the things that you will immediately need at your new place. This essentials box/bag should include:

  • Towels, sheets, and blankets
  • A change or two of clothing
  • Toiletries & medications
  • Cooking essentials
  • Everyday cups, plates, bowls, and flatware

This way when you arrive at your new house you will have everything that you need to get through the first night; especially if you’re too tired to start unpacking.

Label, Label, Label

When you are packing your belongings, clearly label each box with what is inside and which room it should go to when it arrives. Color coding can be helpful as well!

Furniture Planning

It’s a good idea to have an idea where the furniture will go in your new place to help speed up the process and help you stay organized while unpacking.

Plus, it will save you from needing to move heavy pieces of furniture around several times trying to get the layout just right.

Unpacking Tips

Follow these expert tips to make unpacking as stress-free as possible.

Office Space

If you work from home and have a home office, you may need to unpack these items first. Get your office unpacked, organized, and operational as soon as possible so you don’t fall behind on anything important!

Assemble Furniture

Moving day is exhausting and you’ll likely want to crawl right into bed that first night. Assembling and making your bed is a great way to start before you begin to unpack many of the other boxes.

Plus, if you have a plan where you want your furniture to go, you can direct your movers to put the furniture in place, so you don’t have to do that heavy lifting yourself.

Unpack the Kitchen

Once the beds are assembled and the furniture is in place, the kitchen is the best place to begin unpacking. The kitchen is the heart of the home and having your cabinets, cupboards, and appliances unpacked and ready to use will help you shift into living in your new home.

Tackle the Bathroom

After unpacking and organizing all day you’ll want to take a shower or soak in the bath. Your “essentials” box should include your toiletries, soap, shampoo, medications, and any other necessary bathroom items.

Having the kitchen and bathroom unpacked and checked off your list makes the rest of the home easier to unpack.

Move to the Bedrooms

Next, it’s time to start on the bedrooms. Packing bedding in clear plastic bins or bags can help you identify which bedding goes to which room. Also, writing the name of the person’s bedroom on the box can make it a lot easier too.

Living and Dining Rooms

Once your furniture is in place, it will make it easier to unpack the dining and living room spaces. Don’t worry about decorative pieces, fragile items, or artwork until all the essential items are unpacked and in place.

Non-Essential Items

Unpack seldom-used items such as seasonal decorations last. Think about what you usually keep stored in the attic, shed, garage or closet anyway. There’s no big need to unpack them right after you move.

Dedicate a corner for what goes in your at-home storage as you move in, if you need to add storage racks or other organization to your new home or garage.
